The revival caught almost everyone off guard. A format that the industry had written off entirely came back, first as a niche for collectors and then as a mainstream release format that artists at every level now expect to offer. Pressing capacity, which had been reduced to a handful of surviving plants, had to be rebuilt from a very low base.

That history explains most of what frustrates artists approaching the format for the first time. Lead times are long, minimum quantities exist, costs are higher than digital manufacturing, and the technical constraints are real rather than arbitrary. None of it is anyone being difficult. It is the physics of cutting a groove into a disc and the economics of a manufacturing process that never fully industrialized again.

The Chain From Audio to Pressed Disc

The process begins with cutting. A lathe carves the audio as a physical groove into a lacquer coated disc in real time, one side at a time. The cutting engineer makes continuous judgements about groove spacing and level, balancing playing time against volume and fidelity.

The cut lacquer is then electroplated to create metal parts, a sequence that produces the stampers used in pressing. Each stage of plating is a physical process with its own failure modes, and a problem discovered here means returning to the cutting stage.

Pressing itself uses heated vinyl compound pressed between stampers under considerable pressure, with the label applied in the same operation. The disc is trimmed, cooled, and inspected.

Test pressings are produced from the finished stampers and sent for approval before the full run. Listening to these carefully is the last opportunity to catch a problem, and approving them without proper attention is a decision people regret.

Constraints That Shape the Music Itself

Playing time per side is the constraint that surprises people most. Longer sides require narrower groove spacing, which means lower cutting level, which means a quieter record with less dynamic impact. A generously timed side sounds noticeably weaker than a shorter one.

Rotation speed trades time for fidelity. The faster option offers better high frequency performance and less distortion at the cost of substantially less playing time per side, which is why some releases spread across more discs.

Bass content requires specific handling. Low frequency information that differs between channels causes groove excursions that can make a record difficult to track, which is why low end is commonly summed toward mono below a certain frequency.

Inner groove distortion is a physical reality. The linear velocity under the stylus decreases toward the centre of the disc, which degrades high frequency reproduction. Sequencing quieter or less demanding material at the end of each side works with this rather than against it.

Sibilance and sharp transients cut less cleanly than they reproduce digitally. A master prepared specifically for the format, rather than the one used for streaming, addresses these issues before they reach the lathe.

Choices That Affect Cost and Sound

Disc weight is largely a matter of feel and perceived quality. Heavier discs are more rigid and resist warping, though the relationship between weight and sound quality is more debated than marketing suggests.

Colour options have real trade offs. Standard black compound generally produces the lowest surface noise. Coloured and splatter variants are visually distinctive and popular as collector items, with some increase in noise floor depending on the formulation. Picture discs are the most visually striking and the least sonically capable, because the image layer sits between the groove and the substrate.

Packaging ranges from simple sleeves to gatefold jackets with printed inners and inserts. For a format bought substantially as an object, this is not a peripheral decision.

Quantity affects unit cost significantly, since the cutting and plating costs are fixed regardless of run length. Minimum orders exist because below a certain quantity those fixed costs make the per unit price prohibitive.

Planning Around the Timeline

Lead times in this industry are measured in months rather than weeks, and they fluctuate with demand across the whole sector.

The practical consequence is that a release date has to be set backwards from manufacturing rather than forwards from a finished recording. Building in buffer beyond the quoted timeline is realistic, because plating failures, test pressing revisions, and packaging delays all happen.

Test pressing approval is a genuine decision point that stops the clock. Budgeting time to listen properly, ideally on more than one system, prevents both a rushed approval and a surprise later.

Coordinating with a tour or a promotional campaign requires the manufacturing schedule to be locked before anything else is announced.

Preparing Well

Have the audio mastered specifically for the format by someone experienced with it, and supply the correct side sequencing and timings.

Use the manufacturer’s artwork templates rather than generic dimensions, since jacket and label specifications are precise.

Order a quantity you can realistically sell, remembering that records are heavy and shipping costs scale accordingly for direct sales.

Approve test pressings attentively, and raise anything you hear rather than assuming it will resolve in the full run.

The format rewards care because it is a physical object with physical limits. Working with those limits rather than against them is what separates a record people keep from one that merely exists.
